This region along the Mediterranean coast is a popular beach destination because of the wonderful climate in summer, but like Aquitaine, also for the excellent sail and surf opportunities in Gruissan, Saint-Cyprien and Port-Barcarès. Languedoc-Roussillon is characterized by many types of landscapes, from mountains in the Pyrenees to a wonderful coastline with long, sandy beaches. What definitely is worth a visit are the many limestone plateaus, where Causse de Larzac is the largest; these are very old and accommodate many beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. This region offers many historical attractions, including the citadel of Carcassonne, the Roman buildings in Nimes and not to forget the beautiful Pont-du-Gard. Sportive holiday makers can make beautiful cycling and hiking tours along the 250km long Canal du Midi with many aqueducts on towpaths along ancient waterways, which starts at Toulouse and ends into the sea at Sète. And if you do not want to stay in France for a day, you can easily make a daytrip to neighbouring Spain or the Principality of Andorra. With the car you can easily the villas in Languedoc-Roussillon, but you can also fly to Montpellier or Girona in Spain.
